A grocery retailer is to open its first National Distribution Centre (NDC), as it celebrates a record market share and continues with its ambitious expansion plans.

With construction already under way, the 938,000 sq ft Waitrose warehouse will be located at Magna Park in Milton Keynes, and will link up with the existing John Lewis site next door.

Talking about the construction, which is the John Lewis Partnership’s third major building project in just over a year, Waitrose’s director for its supply chain, David Jones, said:

“The decision to open our first National Distribution Centre marks a pivotal moment in our supply chain history and reflects our phenomenal growth.

“Waitrose has outperformed the market for five years and we have ambitious plans to open 38 shops in 2014 and continue to expand our online platform.”

Jones went on to say that the NDC will allow the company to streamline its supply chain operations as it looks to further grow its 5% market share.

With the building’s construction being fast tracked, it could come online as early as November this year. Expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2015, once complete, it will give the retailer well over two million square foot of Grade A distribution warehouse flooring warehouse flooring.

It will also be the largest facility of its kind to be built in Britain in the last two years.

As well as the warehouse, a further building with two office floors will be built, while external developments will see new access roads created, as well as fuel and wash facilities for the distribution vehicles.
