Storage on mezzanine floor for new Guide hut

The Beaconsfield New Guide HQ Fundraising Committee has raised enough money to start on a major rebuilding project, with exciting plans incorporating a mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level for storage.

Founded in the UK by Agnes Baden-Powell in 1910, the Girl Guide movement was a direct response to the Boy Scout movement founded by her older brother Robert Baden-Powell in 1907. Both movements set out to offer boys and girls the chance to experience outdoor adventures, a sense of community and public service.

The girls of Beaconsfield set up in a hut in Malthouse Square in 1920 which, over the last 90 years has fallen into disrepair so that, in the winter, the wooden hut becomes too damp and cold to use. There are also no toilets or any disabled access.

Fundraising began 10 years ago, with the group being awarded substantial grants from various trusts and benefiting from the generous donation of the architectural work by a local firm.

With £260,000 having been raised, work will now begin, commencing with the demolition of the existing hut. The plans, drawn up by Heighway Associates, comprise a single-storey brick building with access and toilet facilities for disabled visitors, a large community hall, a smaller meeting room and a fully equipped modern kitchen. A large area of mezzanine flooring will be built over the main hall, which will be used to store equipment.

The new centre will be used by a number of local groups in addition to the Guides, including pre-school groups and keep fit classes.
