A site previously occupied by JJB Sports in the Peel Retail Park near Yeovil has been taken over by fashion discount chain TK Maxx.

Plans are presently before West Dorset District Council for a refurbishment of the store and an extension to the existing mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level, to give the maximum possible retail space. The project will create around 40 permanent local jobs, as well as a number of temporary construction jobs while the renovations are completed.

Peel Land and Property, which owns the site, intends on spending around half a million pounds on the improvement and expects the store to reopen in the autumn.

TK Maxx already has a presence in the West Country with outlets in Weymouth and Taunton. A spokesman for the site owners said that encouraging more trade to Yeovil would help the wider economy, particularly as JJB Sports going into receivership had affected the area. Not only would both the building and retail jobs increase employment in the town, the new store would act as an attraction for residents in surrounding towns to shop in Yeovil.

The president of the Yeovil Chamber of Trade and Commerce welcomed the news as a boost for trade in the town and said that he hoped it would mark the beginning of a rejuvenation for the whole region. Planning permission for some new coffee and restaurant units at the Peel Retail Park is also under consideration, which would also bring trade and employment to the South West.
