Plans to amalgamate two empty adjoining units into a new Debenhams store at The Coliseum in Cheshire Oaks were agreed at the end of December. The two retail units will be merged into a large two-storey department store with an additional mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring level, which will accommodate a restaurant.

The proposal to refurbish the two vacant units previously occupied by JJB Sports and First Choice Holiday supermarket were accepted by Wirral Council and were backed by the Ellesmere Port Development Board and the MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston.

The new store will comprise over 5,500 sq m with departments for men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, a homeware section, as well as a beauty and perfume department. A range of exclusive own-brand products will also be introduced. It is expected that over 150 sustainable jobs will be created in Ellesmere Port as a result.

The principal of West Cheshire College has welcomed the plans as, in addition to the creation of more full time jobs, a number of training opportunities across all aspects of retailing will be established. The college already has a long-established and co-operative working relationship with retailers based in The Coliseum, and the expansion of a high-quality department store will create additional opportunities to improve the long term economic prospects of the area.

Considerable alterations are planned around the exterior of the development, with a complete re-vamping of the access roads and the car park facility, which will create additional parking spaces at the front of the building.
