Plans have been announced that would see a new conference and entertainment venue built in Aberdeen. If approved, the new facility could be up and running in just over three years.

The new venue, which would be built to a cost of £200 million, would replace the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC).

The new arena will likely encompass a cutting edge design, which will include the use of suspended ceiling systems suspended ceiling systems and mezzanine flooring mezzanine flooring to best use space and sound within the building.

The council has also earmarked an expansive site in Dyce for the venue near the city’s airport.

The current AECC is located near the Bridge of Don, and will stay in operation up until the newly proposed facility comes online.

Whether or not the project will go ahead depends on funding from Holyrood. Ross Thomson, who is involved with Aberdeen’s ruling administration, says talks are scheduled to take place with the Scottish Government soon.

The councillor said:

“The Scottish Government at the moment funds the SECC in Glasgow, and also the concert venue in Edinburgh.

“Aberdeen is so strategic and so important […] particularly with big exhibitions such as Offshore Europe.

“We think there would be an opportunity for the Scottish Government to re-evaluate the way it funds some of the other venues in Scotland and maybe look at diverting some of their funds to Aberdeen.”

Thomson went on to say that international interest has already been expressed for the project.
